August 19, 2019 - It’s a pretty good bet that 20 year-old Calamar has had more people drive him than just about any Standardbred in this province. Owned by one of OSAS’s most dedicated volunteers, Debi O’Brien Moran, Calamar spends his weekends as the star of OSAS’s Drive With Us program.
On Friday nights throughout the summer he and Deb are at Grand River Raceway where fortunate fans are given the opportunity to enjoy a trip around the racetrack on a two seated cart behind a Standardbred. They provide the same thrills for fans at Mohawk on Saturday evenings.
The past two Sundays Calamar has been in action at The Stable’s Summer School courses at Tomiko Training Centre. Through these courses the popular multiple ownership group offers their students a chance to learn more about harness horses through hands on instruction. Calamar gave them the opportunity to experience first hand what it’s like to drive a racehorse.
Deb also trained Calamar during his racing career where he earned over $34,000. A son of Malabar Man, Calamar hails from one of the foundation Stoner Creek Stud families. Almost two decades ago he sold as a yearling for $60,000 and he’s still as striking today.
