Recently adopted pacer Hello Mr P is now known as Maverick at his new home, but unlike his namesake from the famous movie franchise, he’s not the top gun. No, that title belongs to his new best friend, Roxie, who Maverick outweighs by several hundred pounds as Roxie is a miniature horse.

Anna-Mari Muller now owns both horses. The long-time equestrienne adopted Roxie in 2018. “She’s a spoiled pet and companion who loves attention and scratches but due to her rough past we don’t do cart driving,” explained Anna who has been riding most of her life primarily in eventing and jumper. She also competed nationally in pony club PPG and dabbled in barrel racing, western pleasure and trail riding.

Anna recently started fostering horses for the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society which she was familiar with thanks to her friendship with Emma Christoforou whose mother, Joanne Colville, has helmed the agency for more than 15 years. Anna’s first foster horse for OSAS was Solid Queen who found her forever home earlier this month after learning how to ride from Anna.

“Queenie” was still at Anna’s when her next foster horse arrived, Hello Mr P aka Maverick. The five-year-old State Treasurer gelding was just two months away from the racetrack where he faced the gate a total of 55 times, winning just over $55,000. His life mark of 1:54f came at Pompano Park as a three-year-old.

When Maverick first arrived, he was put in the paddock beside the one which housed Roxie and Solid Queen to give him a slow introduction. Anna knew the latter mare was going to be leaving soon so: “I kept Maverick and Roxie within sight of each other while I still had Queenie. When Queenie went to her new home I introduced Roxie and Maverick in the same paddock. Roxie asserted her dominance with a few mini mare squeals and then they immediately hit it off as best friends,” she explained.

“The following day they were grooming each other, napping together, happily sharing hay and playing together. They are pastured together outside 24/7 but if the weather is bad they come inside and have facing stalls to keep each other company.”

Like his namesake, Maverick is very handsome and he attracted a lot of attention when Anna posted photos of him on the OSAS Facebook page especially the picture of him with his unlikely new best friend. In that photo Maverick is laying on the ground and Roxie is standing and they look close to the same height.

It wasn’t long after Maverick arrived at her farm that Anna began teaching him the fundamentals of his second career and she quickly made the decision to adopt him herself for a number of reasons including his instant friendship with Roxie.

“He has a very sweet, docile personality with sharp, handsome looks. He’d only been ridden once before and I have already ridden him on my trails and around my property and he was very well behaved,” said Anna who is aspiring to become a fire fighter. “I am fully trained with all of my qualifications and currently do patient transfer.”

OSAS warmly welcomes Anna and her assorted equines into its foster farm family. Established in 1996, OSAS is the official adoption agency for Standardbred horses in Ontario. One of OSAS’s mandates is to promote the versatility of the breed and their easy going nature which the relationship between Maverick and Roxie certainly exemplifies.

It’s not often that OSAS has a two-year-old in our program but Naso Hanover is not your average two-year-old. “He’s just an old soul. He’s like a 20-year-old horse that’s been doing it forever,” Susan Mollica told WEG’s Matthew Loman in this week’s installment of OSAS Pathways which may be read through the link below. https://woodbine.com/mohawk/mohawk-insider/osas-pathways-naso-hanover/

The Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society will celebrate its 30 th anniversary next year and over those three decades several people have adopted more than one horse from our program. That’s certainly the case with Julie Wilson and her husband Rod MacLean, both retired police sergeants. The couple operate Northumbria Equine in Port Hope, Ontario, and have adopted four retired Standardbreds thus far from OSAS, the most famous of which is millionaire pacer Easy Lover Hanover. Affectionately referred to by Julie as ‘the boss of the barn,’ Easy Lover is the latest horse featured in WEG’s OSAS Pathway’s feature which may be read through the link below. https://woodbine.com/mohawk/mohawk-news/osas-pathways-easy-lover-hanover/

The Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society is pleased to welcome the tough campaigner, Derf Hanover to our program. The talented trotter earned well over half a million dollars the hard way with 234 career starts in 10 seasons at the track. A son of Cantab Hall, Derf earned his life mark of 1:52.3 last year as a 10-year-old while racing at Mohawk. A regular on the WEG circuit for the past few years, Derf started his racing career south of the border under the guidance of trainer Ake Svanstedt. Bred by the renowned Hanover Shoe Farms, Derf sold as a yearling for $45,000. It wasn’t until his four-year-old season that he found his groove and he performed steadily for the next few years earning an average of $87,000 in each of his next six years at the track. From his five-year-old season on he raced in Ontario (with the exception of four starts at Harrahs in 2021). His last full season of racing was spent in the stable of Amanda and Tom Riley who remember him fondly. “Derf is quite the character; he likes to put on that he’s a grumpy old man but with some treats and scratches he melts right into you. He’s great with other horses; usually when he finds his pal he doesn’t let anyone else in his little posse. He’s as tough as they come,” said Tom recently. Derf Hanover is the most talented of his dam’s offspring, but his family is loaded with top performers. His dam is a half-sister to $200,000 winner Cocktail Hour who in turn is the dam of $1.3 million winner Bar Hopping. His second dam is a full sister to the great JEFS Spice. OSAS welcomes Derf Hanover into our program where he will enter training once he’s decompressed from racetrack life.

WEG’s Matthew Lemon is spotlighting horses connected to the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society in a bi-weekly feature called OSAS Pathways. Playsomthincountry is featured in the latest installment. The 16-year-old pacer hails from two of Canada’s longest running and well known Standardbred nurseries. He was bred by Seelster Farms, a stalwart in the industry for many years now and now operated by the second generation of Van Bussel family. His dam, Daylon Luxury, was bred and raised by Dave and Mary Lemon’s Daylon Farms of Komoka, Ontario. Playsomthincountry is a half-brother to $200,000 winner Luxury Seelster p, 4, 1:53s and another sister, Luxury Vacation, is the dam of a horse currently racing in Ontario, Honolulu Vacation. That four-year-old by Betterthancheddar earned his life mark of 1:53s with a win at Mohawk earlier this year. Honolulu Vacation last raced this past Sunday (October 26) at Flamboro for trainer Cody Hawkins who was also the trainer and owner of Playsomthincountry during his career.
