Gratitude To Ahern & Burgess Families
The Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society would like to extend our sincere sympathy to the families of David Ahern and Robert (Bob) Burgess who both passed away recently.
David and Bob were both long time participants in harness racing who both hailed from the Peterborough region. The former started with Quarter Horses and then progressed into Standardbreds with some of his notables being Armbro Trusting and $120,000 winner DG Set For Life, the dam of D G Nickabocker who he raced at his home track of Kawartha Downs in recent years.
Just this month David was racing another of his homebreds, Mister DG, at Flamboro Downs. In addition to breeding, owning and training, David also drove in many races, up until last year.
Bob Burgess was also involved in many aspects of racing over the years. He operated Cantario Farms for many years (best known as the farm which stood Balanced Image among many more prominent Ontario stallions). He and his son Blair campaigned an array of top race horses including Real Desire, Amigo Hall, Amity Chef, Frugal Gourmet and Tell All to name just a few.
Both Bob and Blair are members of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Bob, a lawyer by trade, also served on numerous industry boards over the years and represented many horse people.
We are honoured and moved that OSAS is the charity that both the Ahern and Burgess families selected for donations in their loved one’s memory.
